Research Task - Connotations of Film Industry logos.

DreamWorks Logo:

The white colour of the child could connote innocence and purity which could suggest the type of films that DreamWorks produce and distribute. We know that DreamWorks are known for their PG and U rated films, for little children or families to view together. This is furthered emphasised with the child sitting on the moon, a moon connotes night time, darkness and usually the younger the child the more afraid they're of the dark, therefore the night. So you could connote from this that possibly they're (DreamWorks) trying to promote the idea that their films don't include violence, that they won't scare children and that possibly they're like a goodnight story, which is visual, and comforting.

The Serif  white coloured font, again could connote innocence and purity but it also connotes that they're serious, bold in what they do, possibly with what decisions they make on there films, considering the serif font is rather hard to make out and at first glance it can come across as sans serif.  If you think about it a child will need a parental figure someone to help them, guide them through adolescent life, and that's possibly what they're trying to connote, that they or their movies rather will  help you through life, will stay with you, as most child like films have an overall moral within them, and children will watch these movies and learn them from a young age, its taking the place of a parent in that part of growing up.

The connotation of the word 'Dream' is a rather magic and unrealistic, it implies that things can happen, can come true that you would thought possible in ever-day life, in reality. Its the idea that within their films anything could happen, that characters could achieve the impossible, complete life threatening tasks and still survive and on top of that learn a lesson with it. As DreamWorks is targeted at a younger audience, they could be promoting the idea that if you try hard enough, believe with all you have then you can achieve the unachievable, Its a rather magic idea really.

Take Two Productions:

Take Two Productions is a rather simplistic logo, but with the white and black colour scheme it could connote that its rather fancy, or elegant, defiantly for a more grown up audience in comparison to DreamWorks. This could possibly be because its an independent film institution, therefore it won't have the largest of budgets to advertise its company.

The Film strips that are positioned in such a way to present two T's next to each other could connote that they stand alone and that they're independent and the further connotation of the T's being black, really emphasises that they're bold with their film choices, they don't just go with everyone else its a staple, and connotes that they're unique but also have some features that are the same as every film institution.

Universal:

The production companies name "universal" is wrapped around the earth, this could connote that universal is global, international they're everywhere. When you think of earth you can connote power, dominance, life, new beginnings, maybe that is what universal is trying to express with wrapping themselves around the earth, it something out of our control, we cant change mother nature, and no matter what times can change people, people die or leave or move on but earth will always be a solid foundation, and you can infer that is what Universal is trying to say that with their movies, that the worst can possibly happen but their movies will always be a solid foundation in a tough time.

The font is serif, which could connote a calming and happy theme, or feeling. It makes it seem less serious, which could suggest its for a younger audience because its more carefree and contrasts against the intensity of the earth behind it. Also the fact that the lettering has got an undertone of gold throughout it which connotes wealth, superiority, and authority, which you can link with the fact that universal is a rather well known production company around the world so they have quite a lot of freedom when it comes to the types of films they produce because they are successful enough to.

The black background greatly contrasts against the bright white and gold lettering and the earth which has a glow around the edge of it. This helps to make the earth and the name of the production company stand out much more than if it was any other colour. Black also connotes chic and fancy, the production company could possibly be trying to connote that there films are not just simple and 'childish' films, but they came be targeted at a older audience too.

Vertigo Films:

Sans serif font in a black bold writing connotes that this production company is serious with what it produces and provides its audience. Possibly because the company isn't a very well known one.  Therefore it can't afford to take risks or chances, that ultimately might fail, and cost the company a lot of money they don't have to waste.

The red background in contrast to the black bold company name, effectively adds to the connotation of seriousness. Although the connotation of the colour red can also be danger, blood, death, a threat or warning of some kind, so that could possibly be they type of films the production make, and that's what they're trying to put across, Its a very plain and simple logo, which makes a bold statement, which I'm assuming the company was trying to achieve.

Walt Disney Pictures:

The castle or palace in the background is what every child dreams to grow up in, either that being a prince or princess. It connotes that young children can live their dreams, and that everyone one is a prince or princess. It then has a rainbow going through the castle, and as a child when you saw a rainbow its something magical, it such a mystery to them on how it got there and why its so pretty. The rainbow and castle together can link to theme of fairy tales, which are stereotypically told to young children before they go to bed or when they're upset, its a escape almost like a comfort blanket, when something doesn't go right for them they can be whisked away to a world of magic, and adventures, with handsome princess and beautiful princesses, here Walt Disney manages to play on that idea wonderfully. Its also the types on films Walt Disney are known to produce, young childish films, that are generally animated.

The serif font only helps to encourage the connotation that its for young children, and the curls on the end of the letters leave you to connote the comfort that the movies produce, it's not serious its relaxing and pretty which only advertise the fact that Walt Disney don't produce serious, violent and heavy films they produce light hearted, cheerful magical films. Also the companies name is written in white on the logo which can connote innocent, naivety and purity which most young stereotypical children are seen to be.

Nooran Pictures:

The little child standing on the edge of a cliff trying to hold this special light in their hand can connote, the curiosity to venture outside of your comfort zone and to take risks. Younger children are very restricted in today's society on what they're actually allowed to do, so it leaves them to be curious of the outside world and what it has to offer, that's generally why children stereotypically like to go on adventures and to explore places they haven't been before.

You then have the yellow moon behind the little child and the yellow sans serif font which provide the only colour on the logo, and therefore stand out more. Yellow and black when together connote some sought of warning, but yellow on its own can connote happiness, and freedom were as black can connote loneliness and death, two rather juxta posing colours that appear on this logo. The sans serif font can connote seriousness and help to further highlight the warning premises that could be behind the logo, but its very bold in what its trying to put across and rather elegant with the type of animation style and simplicity of it. It could suggest that this film company likes to take risks and be more bolder in their choice of films to produce.

Evaluation:

•Are there enough people that fit my criteria?
3.5% of the population that is 250 million people in our targeted age group and gender to fit our
criteria. Therfore yes, I think there is enough poeple to fit our criteria

Will my target really benefit from my product/service? Will they see  a need for it?
I think that teenagers will benefit from this product, we want our film trailer to have a heavy focus on mental illness, in paraticular depression, and how that can effect young teenagers lifes in today's society, when you have the added pressure of fitting in or not and your status. I  believe our film trailer will hit home for a lot of young people in our society.

Do I understand what drives my target to make decisions?
I belive I do, considering I'm a teenager myself I think I would have more understanding of what is going through other teenagers minds then say somone much older than me attempting the task. Therfore making it much easier to make a decision on how to produce the film trailer, and what the target audience which is other teenagers will want to be see done in that trailer, and what will make them think "I really want to go and watch that!".

  Can they afford my product/service?
I would belive so, if they're working a part time job, which sterotypically most teenagers above the age of 16 are then they could afford a cinema ticket.

Can I reach them with my message? Are they easily accessible?
I belive so, I think the younger generation are more open to mental illness, and overall more
accepting of it. I would say they can be quite easily accessible as the younger generation are more
up to date with technology and how to use it and where to find the latest news on a certain subject,
so advertising it using convergence would be one way to approach our target audience.

Preliminary Task

Within this Preliminary task we were asked as a group to create a video that incorporated three of the rules that we had learnt in the lesson, these being;

1. The 180 degree rule

2. The shot reverse shot rule

3. The match on action rule

From previous experience in GCSE media I had some idea of what the shot reverse shot rule could have been, and it was just a matter of applying my knowledge to a rule for a video. The shot reverse shot rule is when there is some sought of dialogue between characters, to cut from one person speaking to the other. This can create a rather effective scene of dialogue as it allows the audience to see both sides of the story. The 180 degree rule is a sought of an imaginary line or guideline for where the camera is allowed to film the scene, it establishes what side the characters are on either left or right, but once you have established which side the characters are on, they cant switch sides throughout filming the scene so that's where the imaginary guidelines come in handy, as you know you cant pass that 180 degree line when filming the rest of the scene. This helps to create a sense of realism if you were watching someone speak to each other in reality they wont suddenly switch sides right before your eyes, and that's what the 180 degree is trying to prove,  its simply trying to make the film as believable as possible. Finally the match on action rule is to cut a scene on action, when the character is doing something, in our case that could be me reaching my hand out to the door handle to open the door and then we cut to my hand on the handle actually opening the door.

Music:
Upbeat, happy music with a strong drum beat throughout it, its rather relaxed though at the same time so it the strong vocals and drum beat could connote the troubles and how hard it is to fit in and to get through high school contrasted by the relaxed, upbeat nature to it which could connote excitment, enthusiasm and fun.

sound effects: Voice over, Olive talking about her story about lying and being in high school. Non diegetic music that is upbeat and creates an exited and carefree nature to the film. You have the "weirdo's" or the girls who don't fit in to the rest of the croud which in this case would be Georgia.

Editing:
Shot reverse shot when Georgia is running down the street in her olive costume away from the party and you it cuts from a close up of georgias face looking distressed, embarrsed and upset to the a mid shot of the elderly sitting on the bench staring at her and whispering amoungst themselves cut back to Georgia again. This could connte that Georgia is paraniod everyone is looking at her which is sterotypical for most teenage girls, the majorty or teenage girls stereotypically are rather concerned over their apperance.

Editing:
Cross cutting from the scene at the beach to the party to the car and back again, showing us what they have been up to all summer, its almost presenting us a visual diary of what the students at highschool have been up to throughout the summer break, what they do for fun so we can understand and try and connect with them a little more before the film really starts.

Camera shots and angles:
High angle of a group of teenagers in a car driving down a rode togther, messing around and laughing, this is sterotypically seen in American Teenage angst fillms, because most students within teen angst films can drive, and its usuallt the popular group that all go in the same car togther and mess about on the way to a party or school, trying to look 'cool'.

Sans font, connotes that is very serious and the pink and green are sterotypical male and female colours, the pink and green are rather vibrant colours That give off a rather retro and 90's vibe to the film. The letters "L" in the title are both capatalised where as the rest of the title is not apart from the "C". sound effects:
Voice over - non diegetic sound to tell us more about the movie, gives us a feel for the characters that will be involved and provides us with information about the highscool, and why the charcaters are there.

Title:

Sans font, large yellow wrting, connotes a serious tone to the movie, yellow connnotes a warning but also it can connote happyness which is sterotypically associated with teen angst films, usually there is some drama within the begining or middle, and then it resolves itself in the end and everyone is happy again.

Editing:
Transition from the black screen to it smashing and showing the location of the highschool. which also emphasises the badass theme that may run througout the rest of the film.
Montage of shots of the high school, all the classrooms and hall ways, giving the audience a feel of what the school is really like, what it looks like before the film really begins, so we can start guessing what kinds of characters will be within this movie.
